Secretly a Sadako's fan, I have stopped watching any horror movie since The Ring. Only recently I realised that Sadako has still actually left a profound impact within me since then. This contribution is my expressions of fear (and love?) towards this classic horror movie figure with my own unfashionable fashion. Through this exercise, I hope to conquer my inner fear by getting familiar with Sadako's spirit. WARNING: you may not find any substantial value in Sadako's diary, read on at your own risk.

Together with Kuanth (Malaysia/Singapore), Redslim08 (Philippines), Darbotz (Indonesia), Samuel Indratma (Indonesia), Arya Palguna (Indonesia) Jam Wu (Taiwan) and Syan aka MC Yan (Hong Kong),
it was great pleasure to be able to do my second art installation for NeoFolk exhibition at Cutlog contemporary art fair in Paris this year. It was curated by Damien Brachet from Gorgeous Productions. Neo Folk explores the work of artists in Asia who rediscovers their roots and traditional crafts, more weird and wonderful creations by different artists are featured in Kult magazine.

“I would like to shower my audience with blessings of love and happiness by drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese lucky charms that have adorned homes for centuries. I’ve always been fascinated by their intricacy in detail yet simplicity in representation
of forms – plus,who wouldn't want an extra boost of good luck in their lives?To add a fun, original twist, my version of this folk-art handicraft features nostalgic snacks, loved by Singaporeans of all generations.Working with felt, I created this homage to Singaporean culture by showcasing traditional tidbits, locally known as “Kuih”. These bite-sized morsels make no apologies when it comes to their bold use
of colour and flavour. Sweet, salty, savoury and spicy – they are an aromatic blend of Chinese, Malay, and Indian; a seemingly strange brew of heady tastes and flavours that come together in perfect balance and harmony. Literally a feast for the eyes, this larger-than-life charm brings a taste of Asia to the world. A satisfying serving of warmth and happiness, like the comfortof home cooking.”

This installation is 70cm X 70cm X 100cm, made with felt, polyster, acrylic and bamboo. You can find 41 kuihs in total and below are some individual snapshots of the kuihs:

The making of this installation was therapeutic in the beginning but it turned into crazy hell later on which... I think I died twice in it. I must thank all my angels who had lent me your hands in the making:

My first attempt to complete an illustration using hand-stitch method... and I almost died from stitching! It's therapeutic to do stitching but not when you are rushing for deadline. :-/

ミナを着て旅に出よう (wearing Mina and go traveling) is the title of a book I read long ago. It's written by Akira Minagawa, who is the designer behind the fashion brand, Mina Perhonen. The book was basically about how he turned himself from a long distance runner to a part-timer in the fish market and finally a fashion designer. In the fish market, he observed life and got inspired. Akira Minagawa puts simple motifs which you can find in everyday life onto fabrics. He is a fashion designer with the spirit of a long distance runner, who believes in making fashion that has stamina to cross through lapse of time without losing its charm.

I wonder why most fashion only focus the beauty and vibrancy on the young ones while the old ones seems to be neglected most of the time. To me, an elderly like my grandmother, who is a long distance runner in her own journey of life, deserves wearing Mina Perhonen with long distance runner's spirit. What you see on the canvas is a picture I took of my grandmother on a trip to the southern part of the world. The first picture that captured her laughing so happily hard.

This piece is my latest personal artwork for a group show curated by OIC:

IDOLISM X OIC X A CURIOUS TEEPEE

Opening Launch: Thursday 5th May 2011, 7.30pm to 9.30pm

A tweed jacket, lobster claw heels, four little white stitches, a red gown…Iconography that has been etched into our psyche wittingly (and unwittingly) through the delirious world of fashion.

For this exhibition, illustrators draw inspiration from these objects of desire and their inventors, creating original artworks in the process. Using different mediums, participating artists include Mindflyer, Mr B, Fleecircus, Sokkuan, Cherie The Mrr, Eeshaun, AnnGee, SanSan, Noreen, Fei, Miel, Annie Tan, Twisstii and Mriz Sidah just to name a few. With varying backgrounds and styles, from political cartoons, to abstract surrealism, several take their first foray into fashion as subject matter.

With the inaugural Singapore Men’s Fashion Week just past and the upcoming Audi Fashion Festival this May, A Curious Teepee and OIC aim to convey another side of fashion, as seen through the eyes and hands of an artist.

All artworks are on display and available for sale till Sunday 22nd May at A Curious Teepee, 12pm to 9pm daily.

Found this old school work (watercolour) which took me the whole semester to complete. Now looking back, I think it's quite amazing. In conjunction with Singapore Design Festival 2009, ABSOLUT has invited five designers (fFurious, H55, Kuanth, Kult and myself) to create a word art installations that capture the brand’s anthem, "IN AN ABSOLUT WORLD, Doing Things Differently Leads to Something Exceptional."

I was given the word "SOMETHING" for the installation. And I have chosen the magical combination of a kaleidoscope within a diamond to express the ABSOLUT world: pure with perfection, yet unrestricted in limitation. While SOMETHING is abstract in meaning - undetermined or unspecified. It is for the beholders to interpret what SOMETHING means to them. The use of kaleidoscope within a diamond facilitates this process by allowing the viewers to see what is reflected on the multi-faceted surface depending on their point on view.

This diamond-kaleidoscope was totally handmade. And it's my first time doing something 3D. Although the finishing is not as perfect as what I wanted, but I have tried my very best and I am happy to be given this chance after all. Looking forward to do more installation, but hopefully with more production time. (' u ')
